Gene’s Barber Shop - Greensboro, North Carolina

These are a few of my favorite shots from a project I did in photojournalism last semester. 

Gene’s is one of those establishments that when you take your first step inside, you know you’re in the right place. I found them while doing a Google search for an actual barber shop instead of a hair salon. The reason being because the place I was going to before was charging me about $25 a visit and I didn’t feel like I was getting what I was paying for.

The reviews couldn’t have been better. Some guys mentioned they’ve been getting their hair cut at Gene’s since they were kids, and now they take their sons there. I had to check this place out, it sounded perfect.

I made my appointment for the next day and it was the best thing I’ve ever done for the little bit of hair I still have on top of my head. Not only did I receive a great haircut, but also a beard trim, a warm-lathered straight-razor neck shave and a massage. I’ll just say that it made the rest of my day, no, week better. Oh, and did I mention they have an old Coca-Cola fridge that’s filled with glass-bottled Coke and Orange Crush?
